German tuning shop Hamann worked their magic on the all-new BMW F86 X6 M. The super sporty Sports Activity Coupe gets an impressive power upgrade and now produces 640 horsepower from its standard 575 horsepower developed by the 4.4 liter V8 TwinTurbo. Torque was also increased to a whooping 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) available between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm. The base engine produces 749 Nm or 553 lb-ft of torque. But more interesting than the power upgrade is the addition of a carbon fiber hood which not only gives the car a sportier look but also lowers the weight of the heavy SAC.

As always, Hamann upgrades the wheels to their 23 inch “Anniversary Evo” wrapped in 315 sized tires. By using custom sport springs, Hamann lowered the X6 M by 45 millimeters.

At the rear, four brilliant tailpipes ensure a perfectly smooth finish; the visible tips can be optionally made from carbon, stainless steel or ceramic.

The Vorsteiner aero carbon fiber program for the BMW M6 is one of best programs every launched for the premium coupe. The addition of aggressive and lightweight performance aero parts makes the M6 even more appealing, without impacting its performance. The addition of the Vorsteiner Flow Form V-FF 103 wheels proves to be the final touch needed to really set apart this Alpine White M6. The wheels feature a mesh design and a darker finish which works well with the exterior of the M6.

This BMW M6 comes with the Carbon Graphite V-FF 103 Wheels in a staggered 21×9.5 front and 21×11 inches rear fitment. The BMW M6 is powered by a 4.4 liter BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine delivering 560 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. The Launch Control feature lets your engine achieve maximum acceleration from a standing start, so you can brandish every lb-ft right off the line. Dane Cameron and Michael Marsal, driving the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW Z4, scored BMW’s first GTD class victory of the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season at Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Conn. The duo completed 162 laps of the 1.5-mile, 7-turn road course (the race utilized the uphill chicane) in the two-hour-and-forty-minute race, finishing 3.505 seconds ahead of the No. 33 Dodge Viper of Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating. Turner Motorsport came very close to not making the start after a practice crash on Friday by Marsal made for a late night and even earlier morning of repair work by the crew at a local body shop. Missing the qualifying session, Marsal started at the rear of the 17-car field composed of PC and GTD cars. He drove a strong first stint to stay on the lead lap before handing off to Dane Cameron, the 2014 GTD driver’s champion, who was available to drive this weekend because the DP class he races this season was not part of the event. Cameron moved into the class lead on lap 105 and stayed out front to take the checkered flag on lap 162 for Turner Motorsport’s first win of the season. The Californian set a new race record with the fast lap of the race (53.695 seconds) on lap 79.

Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge After the green flag waved in Saturday’s two-hour Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Conn. it took only 59 seconds for the first caution period to occur. Unfortunately, the cause was contact to the rear of Ashley Freiberg’s No. 46 BMW M3 in the middle of Grand Sport class competitor scrum that forced her on the wet grass, then into and almost over the turn four tire wall. For the second consecutive race BMW Motorsport driver Trent Hindman was unable to drive.

Bill Auberlen, making a guest drive in the No. 21 Burton Racing BMW 128i with BMW Team RLL teammate John Edwards, started from the eighth position. He quickly jumped to third after the restart, but dropped back almost as quickly as a suspected broken front sway bar crippled his progress around the 1.5-mile, 7-turn bull ring. Edwards took over the struggle on lap 61 with some 50 minutes remaining, ultimately finishing 22nd. Bimmerworld Racing finished sixth and ninth in the Street Tuner class with Nos. 84 and 81 BMW 328i respectively to be the highest finishing BMWs in the race. The race was won by 2004 Formula BMW USA Junior Billy Johnson (US), driving a Ford Shelby GT350R-C. All TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge classes will next be in action at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, Wis., on August 8 – 9.

BMW Announces the First Integration of EnLighten App

The BMW Group announced today that it is the first manufacturer to bring the EnLighten App, by Connected Signals, into the car. Drivers of BMW Vehicles with iOS Devices will be able to see traffic signal data on the vehicle’s display in real time. The EnLighten app makes driving in cities easier by helping the driver anticipate traffic signal changes, which can increase safety and help save fuel by avoiding unnecessary acceleration. The EnLighten app shows the current status of the traffic light in front of the car in real time as well as a countdown to when the signal will change. Based on the current vehicle position, as well as its speed, the EnLighten app offers a recommendation about whether or not to stop for the traffic light or proceed through. An audio alert notifies the driver about a pending change in the signal they are approaching.

At intersections where there are dedicated traffic signals for turns, the activation of the vehicle’s turn indicator tells the app of the driver’s intention to turn so that only the status of the relevant signal is displayed. In order for the EnLighten app to work it requires a city to have an integrated network of smart traffic signals. Supported cities currently are Portland and Eugene, OR and Salt Lake City, UT offering more than 2000 traffic lights. More cities will follow.

The state of cyber hacking into cars

Imagine driving down the highway at 70 mph and then suddenly losing control of certain functions one by one. First, it starts out as the loss of inconsequential things, like the radio and A/C controls. But then the wipers start to have a mind of their own and then the brakes cut out. Now you’re trapped in a two ton steel box rolling down the highway at rapid speeds with no way to stop. Sounds scary right? Well, it should. And what’s even scarier is the fact that it’s incredibly real and possible for this to happen. Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek are hackers. Hackers that use their powers for good. They often hold conferences to teach people about how to avoid these kinds of dangerous scenarios. Well, Charlie and Chris decided to do a little experiment with the Jeep Cherokee and willing participant, Andy Greenberg. The new Jeep Cherokee has a bit of an issue which allows it to be remotely hacked. A zero-day exploit allows hackers to wirelessly enter the infotainment system and from there can control dashboard functions, steering, brakes and even the transmission. So Miller and Valasek put Greenberg in a new Cherokee and sent him onto Route 40 in St. Louis, Missouri, and had him get the car up to 70 mph. That’s when the fun began. Greenberg knew ahead of time that the two hackers were going to play with the car a little bit, wirelessly, but he had no idea to what extent. As he’s driving along, at highway speed, is when the A/C came on full blast, out of nowhere. No biggie, might make the cabin a bit too cold, but otherwise is not a real issue. Then the radio switched on full blast. Again, not too big of a deal, just annoying. But then the windshield wipers and washers kicked on and stayed on, clouding the glass. This can be dangerous as it can impede vision. But then it to even scarier. It can be terrifying to know that this sort of thing can happen and the automakers wouldn’t be aware until it’s too late. This stuff was all child’s play compared to what a hacker could really do if they so chose. Well the hackers decided to choose to do so and cut the transmission on Greenberg. No matter how hard he pressed the accelerator, no power was getting to the wheels. The rpms dropped, slowing the car down to a crawl on an overpass with no shoulder, which started blocking traffic. Cars behind him are honking and passing, but nothing worried Greenberg more than the approaching 18-wheeler which he hoped noticed his stillness. Though, after this ordeal, he was able to nurse the Jeep of an exit ramp and turn the car off and back on again, which reset the transmission.

Afterwards, he got back onto the highway and the hackers got back to hacking, testing other features. The last one they tested was probably the scariest, as they cut the brakes altogether, causing Greenberg to slide into a ditch. Ultimately Greenberg was unharmed, but only because this was a closed experiment with safety precautions in place. Story promoted by Corsia Logistics Corsia Logistics This experiment shows how vulnerable certain automotive systems can be. It can be terrifying to know that this sort of thing can happen and the automakers wouldn’t be aware until it’s too late. Miller and Valasek made Chrysler aware of the issue have been working with Chrysler for the past nine months to help create a solution. But had it not been for these two hackers, who knows how long would have gone on and how many people would have figured this out and injured or even killed people. As a result of this experiment, on Friday, Chrysler announced that it’s issuing a formal recall for 1.4 million vehicles that may be affected by a hackable software vulnerability in Chrysler’s Uconnect dashboard computers.  The recall doesn’t actually require Chrysler owners to bring their cars, trucks and SUVs to a dealer. Instead, they’ll be sent a USB drive with a software update they can install through the port on their vehicle’s dashboard. Alternatively, Chrysler owners can download the patch to a computer right now, put it on a USB drive, and install it on the dashboard. Wired says the software fix can be found here. Furthermore, Chrysler says it’s also taken steps to block the digital attack Miller and Valasek demonstrated with “network-level security measures,” including blocking attacks on the Sprint’s network. And according to a tweet by Valasek, that’s been successful. Looks like I can’t get to @0xcharlie‘s Jeep from my house via my phone. Good job FCA/Sprint! — Chris Valasek (@nudehaberdasher) July 24, 2015 Both Miller and Valasek will be speaking at a Black Hat Security conference in Las Vegas next month about this and also publishing their findings. This sort of thing can be prevented in the future and automakers will likely pay more attention to cyber security and software updates.
