Based on the most recent spy photos, the folks over at Gmotors took a shot at rendering the next generation BMW 1 Series Hatchback. The F20 1 Series goes on sale in early 2012 and the official unveiling will take place at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The next generation 1 Series will be available in three and five door variants with both variants using the new modular/expendable platform. The backbone of these models was designed especially for this purpose so every model can have a variation backbone, simply be moving suspension points and firewalls to areas that will benefit each vehicle. Corroborated with more parts sharing, this new approach will allow BMW to reduce even more the production costs. The rendering below shows an adventurous and dynamic look, with some design elements reminding of the 5 Series GT. We expect the 1er to have a more aggressive look, fitted to the 1 Series bodystyle.

Inside, our sources confirmed that the steering wheel design and dashboard controls align with the current design language at BMW, including the new LCD screen that takes a similar stand as the one recently displayed in the new 6 Series Concept. The car will inherit some cues from the 5 Series, taking the sometimes criticized 1er interior to higher luxury levels. The 1er will remain a rear-wheel drive vehicle and shares the same L7 architecture as the next 3 series. At the same time, the L7 has the flexible firewall location geometry that will allow it to accommodate FWD, RWD, or AWD models. We expect the first official photos to hit the web sometimes in August. Press Release: From autumn 2011, all new BMW cars can be equipped with an innovative traffic information system to ensure that sheer driving pleasure is compromised as little as possible by tiresome traffic jams and tailbacks. Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI) has been developed by BMW ConnectedDrive for BMW navigation systems. It delivers unique dependability and accuracy in the automotive sector when generating, transmitting and applying information on the latest traffic situation in real-time. This data is used for calculating the most efficient route and making any subsequent detour recommendations. BMW ConnectedDrive customers are able to use RTTI as a premium alternative to the continually available Traffic Message Channel (TMC). The key benefits are as follows: faster and more comprehensive data communication via cellular networks and the SIM which is integrated in the vehicle. In addition to motorways and major roads, the new system also covers country roads and numerous inner-city links.

Considerably more data are taken into account for analysing the traffic situation and they are also updated more frequently. In the future, BMW drivers will receive precise information about the traffic situation on a potential diversion route in addition to warnings about traffic jams on the current route. Unexpected delays occurring on the alternative route are thus a thing of the past. Instead, the navigation system always seeks out the fastest route to the driver’s selected destination, even under the most adverse conditions. This very tangible benefit for streamlined journeys compared with previous bulletins about tailbacks is based on the significantly increased volume of data that can be used for analysing the traffic situation. Apart from the traffic reports provided by the police, only a limited number of sensors are available on motorways and arterial roads so far, whereas the future will see both moving and stationary vehicles providing data that indicate the latest status on traffic flow and congestion. Apart from truck fleets operated by freight forwarders and taxis with navigation systems linked to a control centre, mobile phones carried in vehicles will also deliver data that indicate traffic jams or tailbacks.

The dynamic network connections of cellular phones will transmit anonymous movement profiles which will be matched with the entire road network. The number of locations and the speed at which they are changed within the cellular network will provide information about the current status of the respective traffic situation. Data are transmitted in real time via the GSM cellular network. An active smartphone app is not necessary. Local authority traffic computers will also be included in data aggregation, which will allow drivers in many towns and cities to receive information about possible delays on ring roads and connection routes between cities. Coloured road markings on the navigation map displayed in the control display of the iDrive control system indicate the latest traffic flow. The appropriate traffic situation is displayed in four increments – from green for free traffic flow, through yellow for slow-moving traffic and orange for stop-and-go, to red for gridlock. The analysed road network is divided into sections of 500 metres and information is updated every three minutes. This means that very precise data is provided on the length of queues and the resulting delays. The driver is also able to notice changes on the color map display to identify whether the traffic situation has gotten worse or the tailback has already started to disperse. The detailed data covering a comprehensive and dense road network enables RTTI to provide much more precise and dependable recommendations on alternative routes. For example, if a tailback is reported on a particular motorway section, the navigation system can immediately calculate the resulting delay whenever destination guidance is switched on. However, this is not the only parameter that can be determined. Since the traffic situation on roads away from the motorway is also recorded for the first time, the system provides effective suggestions on the alternative route. Once again, the system substantially reduces the risk of driving into other congestion areas when travelling on the alternative route and losing additional time as a result. Recommendations on alternative routes include precise data on the difference in distance and time compared to the current route. This knowledge provides the driver with the option of accepting the traffic jam on the main route, if the proposed alternative routes offer no time savings. Drivers also have the option of deciding to take a longer diversion in order to have a less stressful journey and perhaps even include a pleasant stop-off en route. For many years, BMW ConnectedDrive customers have already been able to take advantage of exclusive supplementary information on traffic conditions in place of the TMC messages. The Traffic Info Plus service (V-Info+) provided by BMW ConnectedDrive supported drivers with information on the length of queues and delay times, as well as the weather conditions and corresponding state of the road along the route. The introduction of the succeeding system RTTI has further developed the intelligent integration of driver, vehicle and surroundings in order to further promote comfort and enhanced driving pleasure. In order to use RTTI, the car must be equipped with the BMW Navigation System Professional including mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface. The new generation of traffic information will be offered as a priced option in addition to a BMW ConnectedDrive contract. [Source: BMW ]

BMW continues to build the anticipation leading towards the unveiling of a new concept at the Geneva Motor Show. BMW ConnectedDrive Concept is rumored to showcase the latest advancements in the ConnectedDrive area. While details are scarce at the moment, we predict that BMW will demo some of their latest car-to-car communication features, road safety technology and many others. A new video released on BMW Youtube channel illustrate some of the new things available in future vehicles. One of them is Follow-Me, a feature that connects your car to the playlists you have in your home. By using cloud storage technology, your BMW could access any music that is available on your home computers or media devices.

Mood-Based Playlist features works in a similar way as Pandora, the popular application and internet radio that plays tunes based on the genre you choose. Mood-Playlist allows you to select your mood as you enter the vehicle and the application will download music from the internet that matches your personal mood. As far as the ConnectedDrive concept, the ConnectedDrive Futurelab website gives a short teaser description of the new vehicle: “2011 is also the year in which we are setting the course for the future. Initial insights are already available to you now in the FutureLab from BMW ConnectedDrive. Or soon right here, with an extraordinary vehicle, which will once again revolutionize driving in terms of comfort, infotainment and safety. Exactly as you have come to expect from BMW”.

Autojunk.nl spotted the current generation BMW M5 with an unique….paint job. The M5 in question had its entire body wrapped up in black carbon fiber. In the past we have seen similar M5s sporting either matte paint jobs or vinyl wraps, but this is the first time we see a BMW with a carbon fiber “paint job”. The M5 was spotted in Rotterdam, Netherlands and beside the unusual color, the car also featured a loud Eisenmann exhaust, blacked out kidney grille and beautiful black BBS wheels. For special effects, the owner threw in an M stripe placed across the hood. The current generation BMW M5 is soon to be replaced by the upcoming F10 M5, a vehicle that is just weeks away from its official unveiling. The new M5 goes on sale in 2012 and it is rumored to be the most technologically advanced M vehicle built to date.

In the mean time, the E60 M5 remains a looker and the V10 V8 natural aspirated engine will make us miss it even more.

BMW Finishes 1-2 at 2011 24 Hours of Daytona

After 24 hours – Chip Ganassi’s 01 and 02 Daytona Prototypes powered by Dinan-BMW 5.0L V8′s have won the 49th 24 Hours of Daytona. In the course of 23 hours and 58 minutes of hard racing, the finishing line up would be determined in...

After 24 hours – Chip Ganassi’s 01 and 02 Daytona Prototypes powered by Dinan-BMW 5.0L V8′s have won the 49th 24 Hours of Daytona. In the course of 23 hours and 58 minutes of hard racing, the finishing line up would be determined in the last two minutes and on the last lap with the 02 Chip Ganassi Racing feeling the pressure of the #9 Action Express Porsche Daytona Prototype. This win marks the first time a BMW earned an overall win in the 24 Hours of Daytona since 1976 when a similarly blue and red BMW 3.0 CSL took home a victory. This is also the first time BMW had earned a 1-2 finish in the historic race. While the win was well-earned, the race wasn’t always so certain. Joey Hand took an unfortunate penalty when he clipped a tire leaving the pits and had to absorb a 30-second penalty effectively leaving him 4th after an incredible drive and three back-to-back stints that left Joey complaining of a numb right foot. However, it was ultimately worth the discomfort as Joey’s driving decimated the penalty and putting the 01 car back into contention for Scott Pruett when he took over for the final stint. Pit strategy allowed Scott Pruett to get by his Ganassi team member Scott Dixon in the 02 car during the closing hours of the race.

The 01 Chip Ganassi DP car powered by BMW Power Reportedly, there were no team orders between the 01 Target/TELMEX BMW and 02 TELMEX/Target BMW other than “Just don’t take each other out!” This victory marks Joey Hand and Graham Rahal’s first 24 Hours of Daytona victory and they’ll certainly enjoy putting on their brand new stainless steel Rolex Daytona wrist watches! In GT, BMW did not fair as well as their Daytona Prototype brethren. Turner Motorsport’s brand new E92 M3 entrant held strong throughout the race but was unfortunately sidelined for many laps when a gearbox repair sent the M3 int the pits during the night. However, the Turner M3 proved to be a very quick car with a great driver line-up when it held strong in second place in GT just behind the historic Brumos Porsche 911 GT3 before the gearbox issue reared its head. The mechanical failures that struck the Turner and Brumos teams opened up a gap in the GT3 category for the TRG Porsche to slip into the lead and ultimately win their class and finish first in class and twelve overall just behind the prototypes. The Turner M3 finished 17th in class and 32nd overall.

The Turner Motorsport M3 – Sidelined temporarily by mechanical woes Another small victory, but victory nonetheless, was the 1 M Coupe which had a very successful stint lapping the Daytona International Speedway circuit over the entire 24 hour race as the official pace car. This was the first official duties the 1 M Coupe had as a pace car and the Valencia Orange two-door executed them flawlessly. If anyone has any doubts before placing an order – the 1 M sounds incredible and looks spectacular in the release color of Valencia Orange.

The BMW 1 M Coupe – Best Pace Car Ever? Overall, the 1-2 victory for BMW is an incredible finish – in a race more about retention than outright performance, the Dinan-BMW V8′s managed to do the nigh unbelievable and both go the distance and hold of the typically fierce competition from the Porsche’s. While the GT class finish for Turner Motorsport’s M3 wasn’t as well as had hoped, especially given their performance, they will be back to fight against RX8′s, 430′s and GT3′s in the Grand Prix of Miami in early March at the Homestead Miami Speedway.

BMW 1M coverage continues. This past weekend, the new M was the official pace car at the Daytona 24 Hours race. SPEED TV gets the unique and exciting opportunity to test drive the first 1M available in the US. The review is nothing short of spectacular and Chris Neville is more than impressed. The 1M is shaping up to the one M vehicle we have all been waiting for, a return to the first days of M automobiles when the focus was on the driving experience. In the short video, Speed TV takes the 1M around the race track and Neville gives the 1M thumbs-up when it comes to cornering, braking capabilities and handling. The 1M launches in the United States on May 16th, coinciding with the first test drives and we are excited to get behind the wheel of this new M.

Our own Andrew Murphy is present at the annual Daytona 24 Hours race and brings us some more photos of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe that served as a pace car. A report on the race and more photos will follow, but for now, we would like to share these exclusive 1M photos. For those of you that have asked before, now we can reveal that the 1M used as the pace car is a prototype vehicle that was sent to the U.S. for evaluation purposes and also to be used as the pace car in Daytona. The 1M seen here doesn’t feature the standard Xenon lights we will see on the production vehicles and inside some of the manual controls will be replaced by the usual 1 Series interior. A quick recap: the 1M makes its U.S. debut on May 16th and it will have a base price of $47,010. The new 1M builds atop the 135i Coupe and it said to have the perfect balance. It is 71 inches (1803mm) wide – 4.8 inches (122mm) wider than its 1988 M3 ancestor – yet only 1.3 inches (33mm) longer at 172.4 inches (4379mm) long.

The new 1 Series M Coupe weighs in at 1,495kg DIN (3,296 lbs, preliminary), and features a 104.7-inch (2659mm) wheelbase, three inches longer than the 1988 M3. Front and rear track widths are exactly the same on the 1 Series M Coupe at 60.7 inches (1542mm) each. Compared to the 2011 BMW 135i Coupe, the 1 Series M Coupe is 0.2 inches (5mm) longer, 2.1 inches (53mm) wider, 0.5 inches (13mm) taller, and rides on the same 104.7 inch (2659mm) wheelbase. With 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, the 1M at its current weight could be just as fast as the M3 Coupe, a statement confirmed by some that had a chance to drive it at Nurburgring.

Although we have already seen a completely uncovered production 6-series coupe, these spy photos confirm that the upcoming production 2012 6-series coupe will feature a glass panoramic roof! A beautiful glass panoramic roof has been featured on the 6-series concept car, but these photos confirm that the glass greenhouse will indeed make it to production. The production glass top, however, appears to only extend back until the B-pillar and does not encompass the entire roof as seen on the concept coupe. Having been inside the concept coupe, we can say that the glass roof provides for not only a beautiful look, but also a more spacious feeling inside the coupe, which reduces any claustrophobic feeling – particularly for rear seat passengers. We have posted some photos of the concept glass roof for reference. This particular model is a 650i which houses the same 4.4L twin turbo V8 as in the 550i and 750i that is good for a little over 400HP – full specifications here. The new 6-Series coupe will be debuting at the Geneva Autoshow this spring (March 2011), and will come in both a 640i and 650i variants.
