BMW M235i vs. Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG vs. Subaru WRX STI

MotorTrend compares the new BMW M235i against the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG and Subaru WRX STI. Let’s start with the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG. The high-selling four-door coupe is powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder pumping out an impressive 355 hp and 332 ft-lbs of torque. 0-60 time is just 4.5 seconds. This motor is rated at 178 hp per liter and Mercedes states that this is the most powerful four-cylinder production engine. Subaru WRX STI comes with a 2.5 liter turbocharged flat-4 producing 305 hp at 6000 rpm and 290 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm. It takes 4.6 seconds to run from 0 to 60 mph.

BMW M235i vs. Mercedes Benz CLA45 AMG vs. Subaru WRX STI

Last but not least, the BMW M235i, latest addition to the M Performance Automobiles family, which uses a 3.0 liter turbocharged six-inline producing 322 hp and 332 lf-ft of torque. The M235i is capable of 0-60 in 4.8 seconds when optioned with the 8-speed sport automatic, even though MotorTrend reports 4.4 seconds. Here is an excerpt from their review: Comprehending the M’s character took little effort when hustling among the canyons: a few degrees tilt of the thick helm, a stab of the attentive throttle, one snappy downshift from the eight-speed automatic. Everything’s tuned for dynamism. You feel it. You hear it. The rear 245/35R18 Michelin Pilot SuperSports dug in feverishly, tidily converting the 3.0-liter inline-six’s 330 lb-ft into a smooth surge. The M235i meticulously sliced through the bends, with variable steering that served up an ideal weightiness, albeit with little tactility. “This is a solid-driving car,” Lago opined. “Good fundamentals: powerful engine, rear drive. It’s the basics.” The M put down numbers that would make an extinct 335-horse 1 Series M nervous. Sixty mph came in just 4.4 seconds (the 1M did it in 4.2), and the quarter mile in 13.0 seconds at 106.6 mph (the 1M did 12.8 seconds at 110.2 mph). It ran our figure eight in 24.9 seconds at an average 0.78 g — the 1M did it in 24.7 seconds at an average 0.81 g. The two posted identical lateral acceleration of 0.97 g. Among its two rivals, the M235i was a mid-packer, equaling the STI’s and CLA’s skidpad performances and barely edging out the STI in acceleration. Its brake pedal took some getting used to (too mushy when charging at 10/10ths), but fade was never an issue and its 60-0 braking was the group’s best at 103 feet. We had mixed feelings about its real-world ride quality. “I think it has the worst ride of this group,” said Lieberman. “It’s sprung softer than the STI and AMG, but it just doesn’t eat up bumps as well. Too many secondary motions.” Full review here The article BMW M235i vs. Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG vs. Subaru WRX STI appeared first on BMW BLOG

BMW confirms BMW X2 Sport Activity Coupe. BMW has confirmed the X2 for introduction in 2017. xDrive only , practical 5dr format and sportier 3dr with typical BMW Sport Activity Coupe design outline , based on new BMW X1. Will be sister vehicles to the new MINI Countryman/PACEMAN. Next Countryman influenced by the Dakar-winning competition car as a proper go-anywhere SUV than before. The PACEMAN will be the more stylish sportier lifestyle model but will feature 5drs for added practicality. Vast majority of customers in the C-Segment would consider a MINI if it offered more flexibility and practicality, hence why there is an upcoming 5dr MINI hatch and a more practical Clubman coming. MINI PACEMAN now joins the practical side of MINI.

German tuner Hamann unveils their latest kit for the BMW X6 M50d. The Tycoon EVO wide body kit comes to enhance the visuals of the already aggressive-looking X6. As seen before with other Hamann-tuned vehicles, the BMW X6 M50d gets a redesigned front bumper with LED Daytime Running Lights and oversized air intakes, a restyled rear bumper with a carbon fiber diffuser, rear wing, sportier hood and of course the staple Hamann wheels. The company hasn’t revealed many details on the body kit at this moment, but we expect some interior upgrades as well.

Same goes for the power upgrade which most likely got more ponies as well. Though the X6 has been around since 2009, the new BMW X6 M50d is was one of the first vehicles to launch under the BMW M Performance family and slips just below the full on M series. The M Performance X6 M50d is powered by the 3.0 liter Tri-Turbo diesel motor producing an incredible 381 hp and 546 ft/lbs of torque. READ ALSO: Spotted on eBay – Hamann EVO M The engineers at BMW M tweaked the suspension and handling to benefit from this new powerful motor. The overall package is as I am sure BMW intended 9/10ths of an M.

Despite a massive 4700 curb weight, the BMW X6 M50d, in standard form, runs to 62 mph in just 5.3 seconds. Imagine what this beast can do with a little turbo upgrade from Hamann.

The arrival of the new BMW C evolution marks the start of a new chapter in the urban mobility segment for BMW Motorrad. The electric scooter made its debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show and will go on sale this May. The C evolution is powered by a drivetrain swing arm with liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor via a toothed belt and ring gearing. The rated power output is 11 kW (15 hp), with a peak output of 35 kW (47 hp). This enables the C evolution to achieve a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph, electronically limited) and gives it better acceleration than some maxi scooters powered by engines with displacements of 600 cc or more.

BMW C evolution Electric Scooter will launch in May

The generous 8 kWh capacity of the air-cooled lithium-ion high-voltage battery allows the two-wheeler to cover a range of up to 100 kilometres (62 miles) before it needs to be charged from any domestic mains supply. When plugged in to a standard 220V domestic socket with a 12A charge current, recharging fully from empty takes around 4 hours (with 220V / 16A = 3 h). Riders of the C evolution can set their preferred mix of dynamic performance and efficiency by selecting from the four ride modes. In Road mode, for instance, they have at their disposal maximum acceleration, approximately 50 per cent energy regeneration when coasting and full regeneration when braking. In Eco Pro mode, meanwhile, acceleration and therefore energy consumption are restricted, while the maximum possible amount of energy is recuperated. Sail mode suppresses recuperation while coasting, allowing the C evolution to glide along virtually free of any braking effect when the throttle is released. And for an added touch of dynamism, Dynamic mode combines full accelerating power with a high degree of recuperation.

BMW C evolution Electric Scooter will launch in May

Considered a premium scooter, BMW C evolution also comes equipped with dynamic options, like the Torque Control Assist (TCA), which works in a similar way to the Automatic Stability Control feature on BMW motorcycles with combustion engines. TCA limits the motor’s torque depending on the slip at the rear wheel. Also a large TFT colour display in the instrument cluster offers various useful information to the rider. Pricing will be announced at a later date.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

The 2015 BMW X4 will make its world debut at the New York International Auto Show in April and begin production this spring exclusively at BMW’s US production facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The new BMW X4 offers the premium mid-size segment its first taste of the Sports Activity Coupe concept. Like its larger sibling, the BMW X6, the X4 offers a unique and unmistakable presence on the road. The X6 has demonstrated the appeal of the Sports Activity Coupe concept with 250,000 sold to date.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

A unique expression of The Ultimate Driving MachineTM. Compared to its stable-mate, the BMW X3, the newest Sports Activity Coupe reveals a dynamic personality all its own and an even more ebullient character. At 184.3 inches (4,680 mm) in length, it is 0.6 inches (14 mm) longer than the X3, but is also 1.5 inches (37 mm) lower (height: 63.9 in./1,624 mm) and cuts a persuasive figure with its perfectly balanced proportions and distinctive character. The large air intakes positioned on the outer edges of the front facia and the precise character lines in the front apron lend the X4 a more muscular appearance. This lowers the car’s visual centre of gravity closer to the road, signalling its sharper dynamics. The effect is further enhanced by the LED foglights located below the signature twin round headlights, an arrangement that defines the striking face of every BMW X model.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

The coupe-like roofline of the BMW X4 reaches its highest point over the front seats, reflecting the traditional driver focus of every BMW, before dropping gently down towards the trailing edge of the tailgate. These stretched lines underline the sporting coupe character of the X4. The unique design of the BMW X4 is further reinforced by the fresh interpretation of the signature swage line running along the flanks of BMW models which, for the first time, is split into two. The first section rises smoothly from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, highlighting the dynamic ability of the new BMW X4, while the second part accentuates the powerful sculpting of the rear fenders. The contoured C- pillars – complete with muscular shoulders – represent a continuation of the theme, as does the broad and low-set rear end, which reminds the driver and passengers of the performance potential served up by the new BMW X4 before they even climb aboard.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

Sporty and exclusive interior. The interior of the new BMW X4 reveals a synthesis of sportiness and exclusivity. The X4’s body is mounted 1.5 inches (37 mm) lower than that of the BMW X3. The driver and front passenger sit 0.8 in. (20 mm) lower and the rear passengers 1.1 in. (28 mm) lower, creating the feeling of a classic sports coupe. It is a sensation reinforced by the rear seat bench, which comes with the type of continuously moulded side bolsters normally only provided by two individual seats, but still offers space for three passengers. Equally impressive is the load capacity available, 17.7- 49.4 cu. ft. (500–1,400 liters), which can be used in a wide variety of ways thanks to the standard 40:20:40 split rear seat bench. Everyday usability is enhanced even further by the standard power tailgate. It is available with the extra convenience of the optional Smart Opener, which allows it to be opened with a movement of the foot. All X4s include BMW’s iDrive Controller and central display. When equipped with the available on- board navigation system, the new BMW X4 receives the new iDrive Controller with touchpad, which allows drivers or passengers to use their finger to write letters for text inputs, such as a navigation destination, for example. The premium quality and exclusivity of the interior are underlined by selected materials, subtle electroplated accents, a high-gloss black-panel look and aluminum trim strips in the wood panelling. The unmistakable character of the BMW X4 is further highlighted by a level of standard equipment even more generous than that found on the BMW X3. All X4s include the aforementioned power tailgate as well as a sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles, variable sport steering, Performance Control and rear Park Distance Control.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

M Sport and xLine for extra individualization. Available M Sport brings the outstanding dynamics of the BMW X4 into greater focus. One element of M Sport is the M Aerodynamics package, which gives the BMW X4 a particularly striking appearance. The High-gloss Shadow Line trim lends even greater emphasis to the unique character of the Sports Activity Coupe and the sporty suspension set-up raises driving pleasure another notch. Six selected paint finishes (including Melbourne Red metallic), four special interior trim strips, sports seats with various leather upholstery options, an Anthracite headliner, an M leather steering wheel, M door sill finishers, an M driver’s footrest and a choice of 19 or 20-inch M light-alloy wheels add the finishing touches to the car’s appearance. In addition to the broad-based and high-quality selection of different colors, light-alloy wheels, upholstery variants, interior trim elements and trim strips for which BMW is renowned, the xLine equipment package gives BMW X4 customers the chance to shine an even brighter spotlight on the X character of their car.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

Powerful and refined BMW TwinPower Turbo engines. The state-of-the-art TwinPower Turbo engines available for the new BMW X4 boast High Precision Direct Injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft control and Valvetronic fully variable valve timing. These technologies join forces to provide the high-revving character for which BMW is renowned, along with excellent power delivery, refinement – and impressive efficiency. Drivers with sporting ambitions will appreciate the top-of-the-line X4 xDrive35i. Its 3.0-liter inline six conjures up maximum output of 300 hp between 5,800 and 6,400 rpm and peak torque of 300 lb-ft (400 Nm) at 1,200–5,000 rpm. That’s enough to power the X4 xDrive35i from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The 240 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four- cylinder powering the BMW X4 xDrive28i produces peak torque of 260 lb-ft (350 Nm) and a 0 to 60 mph time of six seconds flat. Both engines are mated to BMW’s 8-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission. BMW xDrive: the intelligent all-wheel-drive system with Performance Control.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

All X4 models have a sporty suspension set-up and come standard with xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Performance Control is standard on the X4. It uses the Dynamic Stability Control system to direct power to the outside rear wheel when cornering which improves traction, turn-in and directional stability. Working in tandem with the standard variable sport steering, these systems allow the BMW X4 to deliver driving dynamics that one would expect of The Ultimate Driving Machine. An xDrive status display in the Control Display uses three-dimensional graphics to keep the driver informed of the car’s body roll and pitch. If the navigation system is specified, a compass display in the instrument cluster is included. BMW EfficientDynamics: ECO PRO mode and coasting function reduce fuel consumption. Further reductions in fuel consumption can be achieved courtesy of ECO PRO mode (selected using the Driving Dynamics Control switch), the ECO PRO Route option and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission’s coasting function. ECO PRO adjusts all of the on- board systems for maximum fuel efficiency. It includes a coasting function which shuts off fuel when the driver lifts off the accelerator. It also provides tips to the driver that would help to drive in a more efficient manner. The payoff is shown in the central display which shows how much further the BMW X4 can be driven on the gasoline available in the tank. With the available navigation system, the ECO PRO Route option prompts the driver to select and follow the route to the chosen destination that would use the least amount of fuel. The X4 also features BMW’s auto start/stop function which shuts of the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop in order to avoid wasting fuel when the X4 would otherwise be needlessly idling.

NEW BMW X4 WORLD PREMIERE

Proactive Driving Assistant offers recommendations. The innovative BMW Proactive Driving Assistant offers additional potential for fuel saving. This technology uses route data supplied by the car’s navigation system to identify situations in advance which will require the car to slow down – e.g. on the way into towns and villages, speed limits etc. – and give suitable recommendations. BMW ConnectedDrive: Driver assistance and services & BMW Apps. Providing added safety and greater convenience in the BMW X4 is the optional full-color Head-Up Display, which projects all important driving information and assistance systems displays into the driver’s field of view in high resolution. What’s more, the latest-generation Navigation System with ECO PRO route guidance now teams up with the iDrive Controller with touchpad. Mounted on top of the controller, the touchpad allows texts – e.g. a navigation destination – to be easily input using a finger. Included with the Navigation System in the US is Advanced Real Time Traffic Information (ARTTI). ARTTI includes a full- color graphic that shows the flow of traffic on major roads and can offer route detours to help avoid traffic jams along the selected route. The array of available driver assistant systems provides an added measure of active safety. Active Driving Assistant + Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go includes Pedestrian and Collision Warning with City Braking function as well as Lane Departure Warning. Also available as options are Active Blind Spot Detection and rearview camera with Surround View which provides a bird’s-eye view of the area around the BMW X4. The available Parking Assistant steers the X4 into parallel parking spaces after alerting the driver to a space large enough for the vehicle. ConnectedDrive Services allow customers to access embedded service as well as select smartphone applications. The available Concierge Service connects the car with a BMW Call Center, providing real-time help with services as varied as making a restaurant reservation or finding the nearest 24 hour pharmacy. The BMW Assist eCall function, meanwhile, takes safety to another level. It is triggered automatically or can be used manually. As soon as the crash sensors report an airbag deployment, the system sends the precise vehicle location and all key information, including an assessment of the likelihood of serious injury, to the BMW Call Center via the built-in SIM card, thus enabling fast and effective assistance at the accident location. BMW Assist eCall as well as BMW Teleservice is standard in every BMW X4, with service included for ten years at no additional charge. With BMW Apps, select third party apps may be accessed and operated using the iDrive Controller and display. Apps which are integrated today using an iPhone include Pandora, Stitcher, Audible, Rhapsody and TuneIn as well as the Amazon Cloud Player.

A new BMW i8 prototype was spotted in Munich. This time around, a Crystal White i8 with blacked out kidney grille that gives the car an even more aggressive look than the standard grille with blue ring lights. BMW i8 can be specified in a choice of four colors, three of which have been created exclusively for BMW i. All the paint finishes provide a striking contrast to the black belt: Ionic Silver, Protonic Blue, Crystal White and Sophisto Grey.

BMW i8 Crystal White and Black Kidney Grille

BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system. The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). In Germany, the BMW i8 starts at €126,000, while in the UK it will cost £ 99,125. The U.S. market will also get the BMW i8 in 2014 at a base price of $135,700. We have recently test drove the BMW i8 and you can read our first driving impressions.

Now in its third generation, the BMW 6 Series makes an important contribution to securing the BMW Group’s success. In 2013 alone, approx. 26,000 of the large BMW Coupés were delivered to customers around the world. In March of last year, BMW Plant Dingolfing celebrated the start of production of the most exclusive way to experience a BMW M vehicle: the BMW M6 Gran Coupé, the BMW Group’s most high-performance, four-door luxury coupe. The BMW 6 Series has a long tradition at the Dingolfing site: In summer 1978, the plant started to manufacture the BMW 635 CSi, to be complemented only a short time later by the BMW M635 CSi. At a top speed of 255 km/h, this sports coupé made BMW history as the fastest BMW four-seater model of all times. When the last vehicle of the initial BMW 6 Series rolled of the Dingolfing assembly line, it was already clear that the plant would continue the success story of the large coupes: Later the same year, production of the BMW 850i began. BMW Plant Dingolfing built this sports coupé for almost ten years on its own assembly line in Hall 52.

BMW M6 Gran Coupe The Nine Millionth Car Built At Dingolfing

In 2003 – fourteen years after the end of production of the first 6 Series – the successful BMW Coupé made its comeback: With the BMW 645 Ci, Plant Dingolfing begins to make a new generation of large coupés. Since then, the BMW 6 Series has more than doubled its volume, thanks to the range of available models, such as the Coupé, the Convertible, and the Gran Coupé, as well as the M variants. “Each vehicle represents an individual customer wish. And with this vehicle, the nine-millionth car made in Dingolfing, we have made your customer wish come true,” commented Robert Küssel, Head of Assembly at BMW Plant Dingolfing, when handing over the BMW M6 Gran Coupé on Saturday. The new BMW Group flagship has only been produced in Dingolfing since March 2013. Its start of production coincided with that of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, to be followed in March of this year by the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. This addition is going to increase the site’s production program to five model series and 17 individual models. “Today, our plant is regarded as one of the most flexible production sites in the global automotive industry,” explained Robert Küssel.

Dirk and Heidi Schulz could see that for themselves on Friday when they were given a tour through the production areas of BMW Plant Dingolfing. “I feel very honored to receive the nine-millionth BMW made in Dingolfing,” stated Dirk Schulz at the handover ceremony. “I congratulate BMW on this model, which I consider the most beautiful in this very versatile production portfolio.” The Hamburg-based businessman has had close ties with the BMW brand and Dingolfing for many years: He bought his first BMW in May 1977. “It was a BMW 5 Series 2.8 liters in white. I bought it just the way it was showcased at the dealership,” he remembered. From there, he went on to various 3 and 5 series models, a BMW 750 iL (1997), as well as a BMW 635 Csi (1988) and a BMW 645 Ci (2004). He also decided to buy the first Z1 after having seen the respective design study.

It is possible that his new BMW M6 Gran Coupé will soon share the garage with a BMW i8: “I was fascinated by the design of the BMW Concept Vision, as the design study for the BMW i8 was called, as much as by the Z1 back then. This is why, in October 2010, I was one of the first people in Hamburg, to get an option on the car.” The article BMW M6 Gran Coupe – The Nine Millionth Car Built At Dingolfing appeared first on BMW BLOG
