BMW F10 M5 Breaks World Drift Record with 51 Mile Drift Video

BMW Performance Driving School instructor Johan Schwartz sets a new world record in the BMW M5 by drifting 51.278 miles — 322.5 laps, all on his home turf at the BMW Performance Center. Here is what Johan had to say after the event: Thanks for all the congrats and support. What a day! I am proud of Saturday for many reasons. Obviously, I am proud for the new Guinness Book of World Record Drift, 51.278 miles (82.506 kilometers), but more importantly for the friends and sponsors who were able to attend, for the opportunity to give hot lap rides after the record drift and all the money that was raised for the BMW Charity Pro Am. This would not have been possible without the support of the BMW Performance Center and crew! Wow, the day went by so fast!

BMW F10 M5 Breaks World Drift Record with 51 Mile Drift Video

Here are the most common questions that I was asked after the event: What made you stop at 51.278 miles? Our goal was initially 40 miles, while out there we decided to go for 50 miles and then when things got cleared to drift on the big corner with smokey tires, we got a little over 51 miles. I had to leave some time as I had promised some supporters of the event a hot lap in the BMW M3 before the day was over. We had fuel to go another 43 miles, so we are ready for more next time

. How many sets of tires did you use? One set, the guys at the BMW Performance Center are great and master many skills, but changing tires while the car is drifting is a skill that they have not mastered yet

. This record was for the Guinness Book of Records for one continuous drift. What kind of tires did you use? Continental Sports Contacts front 255/30/20 rear 295/30/20. Great tires and gave me incredible grip for the whole drift. Did you get dizzy?….no, I could walk a straight line perfectly

How many laps did you drift on the skid pad? 322 laps Was the M5 stock? Yes completely, just changed the oil and checked the fluids before the sideway driving started. Pretty amazing car. The car is now on display at the BMW Charity Pro Am tournament and still has the tires on from the drift record. Tomorrow I leave for Texas to run the US Formula 1 track in Austin for the first race in the Sneed for Speed World Challenge MINI. When I return, I will have more pictures, links and a video from the World Record Drift Event. Thanks again! Until next time! Johan.”

German publication Motorvision jumps behind the wheel of a BMW X6 M to show off its capabilities. The tested vehicle comes with the M Drivers package which removes the electronic speed delimiter allowing for speeds up to 305 km/h. BMW’s first M SAV was introduced in 2010 and under the hood the M engineers placed a 4.4 liter V8 engine delivering 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,650 rpm. The engine uses the twin-scroll twin turbo technology with High Precision Direct Injection. By positioning the twin-scroll turbochargers together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the cylinders. The powerful engine serve as basis for the powerplant found in the new M5.

The BMW X4 will make its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. Ahead of the show, BMW engages bloggers from around the world to introduce their latest vehicles, and to give an early look before the show’s doors open. The second Sporty Activity Coupe in the brand´s model range will be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg, along with the X3, X5 and X6 models. It uses the same platform as the BMW X3 with a body length of 183 inches (4,648 mm), a width of 75.4 inches (1,915 mm) and a height of 63.9 inches (1,622 mm). The design of the X4 stands out with its 3D kidney grilles and “squared” circular headlights. The high gloss frame of the grille is open to the sides and at its lower extreme, lending it an almost “floating” appearance in the center of the nose. The grille features prominently sculptured bars with ultra-stylish detailing.

At the rear, the elegant coupe style roofline makes the car appear longer and more dynamic. For the concept, BMW chose a new color: Long Beach Blue. The F26 X4 will come to market next year.

The M6 with four-doors and coupe-like roofline goes on sale this Spring with a base price of $113,000, only $3800 more than the M6 Coupe. For those in the U.S., BMW still offers the super powerful M6 with either a six-speed manual transmission or our favorite, the M Dual Clutch transmission. BMW also offers M Carbon Ceramic Brakes for $9,250. Optional 20″ M light alloy wheels Style 343M can be purchased for $1,300. The recommended retail price Germany of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is 128.800 €, including 19 % VAT.

The M6 Gran Coupe uses the same S63Tü high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology as the M6 Coupe and Convertible. The power unit produces 412 kW/560 hp and 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft) on tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm, while maximum output is developed between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm. The engine revs to a maximum of 7,200 rpm. 0-60mph is achieved in 4.1 seconds with a top speed limited to 155mph. BMW takes three of their upcoming 2014 models to the famous Nurburgring. First, we have the 2014 BMW i8, the hybrids sportscar that uses two different drive systems – an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The electric motor is not a secondary power source, but rather an equal partner of the internal 1.5 liter three cylinder petrol engine. The engine is mounted at the rear and drives via a dual-clutch gearbox. A 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time comes under five seconds, with a combined fuel consumption in the European test cycle of less than 3 liters/100 km (78 MPG) and average real fuel consumption of between five and seven liters (33 – 47 MPG).

goes into production in November of 2012 and if nothing changes in BMW’s product strategy, we will see the M-tuned 2 Series Coupe on U.S. soil. We initially reported on the M235i back in June 2012, but since then several prototypes have been spied during their testing phase. Launched last year, the M Performance Automobiles

line-up consists of several vehicles tuned by the M Division, considered to be “very sporty and fast, made for everyday driving.” Last on the track we have the F80 BMW M3, the M model that with the highest sales numbers. The F80 M3 will be powered by an inline-six engine with a power output between 420-450 horsepower. The engine is mated to a double-clutch transmission 7-speed transmission, but we expect to see a manual transmission for U.S. customers. The new M3 will debut in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. Here is the video:

The upcoming BMW 4 Series Coupe has been spied once again. With just a few months before its debut, the new 4 Series enters the Final Evaluation Phase where prototypes are being driven around with less camouflage. Just a few days ago we saw the F32 435 with M Sport Package, a prototype we initially thought is the M435i model that is rumored to come to market. It remains unknown if BMW will offer both an M435i and a 435i model. Based on our experience, we believe just one of the two models will hit the market. This new spy video shows a red colored 4er Coupe featuring the optional full-LED headlights.

Under the hood we will see the turbocharged inline six-cylinder with 306 horsepower paired to a six-speed manual transmission or eight-speed automatic. The latter is available on request as a sports automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel. Here is the video:
